A Generative-Discriminative Basis Learning Framework to Predict Clinical Severity from Resting State Functional MRI Data
We propose a matrix factorization technique that decomposes the resting state
fMRI (rs-fMRI) correlation matrices for a patient population into a sparse set
of representative subnetworks, as modeled by rank one outer products. The
subnetworks are combined using patient specific non-negative coefficients;
these coefficients are also used to model, and subsequently predict the
clinical severity of a given patient via a linear regression. Our
generative-discriminative framework is able to exploit the structure of rs-fMRI
correlation matrices to capture group level effects, while simultaneously
accounting for patient variability. We employ ten fold cross validation to
demonstrate the predictive power of our model on a cohort of fifty eight
patients diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder. Our method outperforms
classical semi-supervised frameworks, which perform dimensionality reduction on
the correlation features followed by non-linear regression to predict the
clinical scores
Diamond electro-optomechanical resonators integrated in nanophotonic circuits
Diamond integrated photonic devices are promising candidates for emerging
applications in nanophotonics and quantum optics. Here we demonstrate active
modulation of diamond nanophotonic circuits by exploiting mechanical degrees of
freedom in free-standing diamond electro-optomechanical resonators. We obtain
high quality factors up to 9600, allowing us to read out the driven
nanomechanical response with integrated optical interferometers with high
sensitivity. We are able to excite higher order mechanical modes up to 115 MHz
and observe the nanomechanical response also under ambient conditions.Comment: 15 pages, 4 figure
Involvement of SPATA31 copy number variable genes in human lifespan
The SPATA31 (alias FAM75A) gene family belongs to the core duplicon families that are thought to have contributed significantly to hominoid evolution. It is also among the gene families with the strongest signal of positive selection in hominoids. It has acquired new protein domains in the primate lineage and a previous study has suggested that the gene family has expanded its function into UV response and DNA repair. Here we show that over-expression of SPATA31A1 in fibroblast cells leads to premature senescence due to interference with aging-related transcription pathways. We show that there are considerable copy number differences for this gene family in human populations and we ask whether this could influence mutation rates and longevity in humans. We find no evidence for an influence on germline mutation rates, but an analysis of long-lived individuals (> 96 years) shows that they carry significantly fewer SPATA31 copies in their genomes than younger individuals in a control group. We propose that the evolution of SPATA31 copy number is an example for antagonistic pleiotropy by providing a fitness benefit during the reproductive phase of life, but negatively influencing the overall life span. ©Bekpen et al

Differentiable Kernels in Generalized Matrix Learning Vector Quantization
In the present paper we investigate the application of differentiable kernel for generalized matrix learning vector quantization as an alternative kernel-based classifier, which additionally provides classification dependent data visualization. We show that the concept of differentiable kernels allows a prototype description in the data space but equipped with the kernel metric. Moreover, using the visualization properties of the original matrix learning vector quantization we are able to optimize the class visualization by inherent visualization mapping learning also in this new kernel-metric data space
Optical quenching and recovery of photoconductivity in single-crystal diamond
We study the photocurrent induced by pulsed-light illumination (pulse
duration is several nanoseconds) of single-crystal diamond containing nitrogen
impurities. Application of additional continuous-wave light of the same
wavelength quenches pulsed photocurrent. Characterization of the optically
quenched photocurrent and its recovery is important for the development of
diamond based electronics and sensing
Space Charge Limited 2-d Electron Flow between Two Flat Electrodes in a Strong Magnetic Field
An approximate analytic solution is constructed for the 2-d space charge
limited emission by a cathode surrounded by non emitting conducting ledges of
width Lambda. An essentially exact solution (via conformal mapping) of the
electrostatic problem in vacuum is matched to the solution of a linearized
problem in the space charge region whose boundaries are sharp due to the
presence of a strong magnetic field. The current density growth in a narrow
interval near the edges of the cathode depends strongly on Lambda. We obtain an
empirical formula for the total current as a function of Lambda which extends

EFFICIENCY INDEX USED TO ASSESS SHOULDER STRESS IN COLLEGE SOFTBALL PITCHERS THROUGHOUT A SIMULATED GAME
Shoulder distraction forces in softball pitching are known to have a positive impact on performance yet a negative impact on musculoskeletal health. The purpose of this study was to assess changes in shoulder stress across innings pitched using Efficiency Arm-Stress Index (EASI) scores. Motion capture was used on collegiate softball pitchers pitching a simulated game. Peak shoulder distraction force was obtained using inverse dynamics procedures and used to calculate an EASI score (fastball velocity divided by peak shoulder distraction force in percent body weight). A RM·ANOVA revealed inning had no effect on EASI score (F[6,7]=1.28, p=0.286). Understanding a pitcher’s efficiency score may help shape individual pitching loads. Future work should investigate clinically meaningful changes in efficiency scores and mechanisms behind low efficiencies
